Social media project @Chelt52 relaunches for 2017 to celebrate Cheltenham
Town’s tweeters encouraged to apply to become ‘voice of Cheltenham’ next year
@Chelt52, an innovative social media culture project based in Cheltenham, will relaunch for 2017 in a bid to unearth 52 more hidden gems from Cheltenham.
The project is a rotation curation Twitter account, meaning @Chelt52 passes a virtual ‘baton’ on to a different spokesperson each week to become the ‘voice’ of Cheltenham.
Launched in 2013 by Liam McKinnon and Sophie Fryer, @Chelt52 is now calling for people, businesses, causes – and anything in-between – to apply for a week in 2017.

“We’re really proud to take @Chelt52 into a fourth year and give 52 more local tweeters the chance to introduce themselves to a big, local audience. We’re open to any ideas – the quirkier the better!
This year we had a period where we hosted a clown, then a magician, then a PR company, followed by a football club – which perfectly encapsulated the variety of the account. @Chelt52 highlights the diversity of the town that probably isn’t acknowledged widely enough – which is a reason people enjoy following it”.
Having amassed a following of over 10,000 people to date, the account aims to portray the diverse lifestyles that make Cheltenham unique. Each Monday, a new business, individual or cause from the town takes to @Chelt52 to demonstrate what Cheltenham means to them – and what they contribute to the town.
In 2016, @Chelt52 has hosted sports teams such as Cheltenham Town FC and Old Patesians RFC; entertainers Tweedy Clown and Richard Parsons (aka Gloucestershire Magician); and independent eateries such as The White Spoon and Pod Coffee. Charities are also encouraged to apply after @Chelt52 gave a new audience to the likes of One to One Maths, IT Schools Africa, Goals Beyond Grass and Gloucestershire Guide Dogs throughout the year.
“So far through three years of @Chelt52 we’ve been able to give 156 tweeters from the town a voice on the account. We’ve previously hosted the likes of Gloucestershire Constabulary, Thrill Collins, Martin Horwood and Sophie Smith [former Miss Cheltenham], and now we’re looking forward to compiling a great line-up for 2017”.
The fourth year of @Chelt52 will kick off on Monday 2nd January 2017, with health coach Sarah-Jane Griffiths taking the reins for a motivational and uplifting look at the year ahead. She said:
“I’m going to show Cheltenham how to gain energy, drop stress, lose fat and get happier! As a yoga guide and health coach, I’ll use @Chelt52 to show you how to break the rules a little around food and lifestyle so you most importantly have fun. You can’t green-juice your way out of a life you’re not loving!”
More of the 2017 line-up will be revealed in the coming weeks. Local tweeters are encouraged to apply to take part in @Chelt52 at www.cheltenham52.co.uk/apply.
